Can Love Conquer All?
Innocent love is the most pure… and the sight of those who are in that beautiful whirlwind of its hypnotic clutches is a sight to behold.

Is it true? “Is youth wasted on the young.”

Sometimes, sometimes not.

Romeo and Juliet is the most known western love story of all time.

Why?

This is not an easy question to answer, however, personally, I would never go back to those extremes of pure love; that game playing, jealousy, love-making so innocent,(wonderful) and the relationship inevitably ending in tragedy.

What makes this 500 year old love story one of a kind is its “truth”, that we are essentially envious beings, and pure love is something we all either unconsciously or consciously yearn for…and attempt to destroy.

Shakespeare was a clever fellow: with the sacrifice of these two lover’s, at last, the feuding families ended their years of fighting… the Montague’s & Capulet’s. Peace fell upon Verona.

Does true love always end in tragedy?

A good question.

Shakespeares’ classic is considered a “love story”; but the Bard revealed pure love’s true irony…young love so pure, so intense, so true, the god’s become envious and tragedy is pure love’s ultimate end.

Very sad, but very true.

As the cliche’ goes:

“Nothing ventured nothing gained.”

Re-read this beautiful story and reflect that true love just might conquer all.

Shakespeare is forever
I’m not a believer in love at first sight, so I always thought the premise was a bit silly. I didn’t come to love this play until I taught it to a group of ninth graders during my semester of student teaching.

I had read the play in school, but was never given the opportunity to do more than merely read it. My students were encouraged to act it out and to watch clips from several versions to see how a different director’s perspective could change the story. The most fun day was when the class divided up into Montagues and Capulets and hurled Shakespearean insults at each other.

People get scared of the language, but that’s really the best part of Shakespeare. Revel in it!

The supporting actors shine…
“Romeo and Juliet” maintains pace until the very last page. Audacious crashing of the enemy’s ball, love at first sight, underground marriage, fateful killings of Merkutio and of Tybalt, exile, ruse with Juliet’s death, life-threatening return to Verona, killing of Paris and the double death make it as eventful as any Shakespearean play.

The first pages of Scene I set the tone. The rapid-fire wordplay exchange between Sampson and Gregory will be echoed in the puns throughout the play. The speed with which the servants’ brawl escalates to the brawl of their masters will be repeated when the two youngsters, having met at the evening ball, immediately fall in love and the same night decide to marry. The spirit and imagination of the two minor characters, shining especially bright against the clumsiness of the two pater familias, will resurface in the colorful if bawdy Merkutio and the bold old Nurse, dangerously close, respectively, to Romeo and Juliet.

Merkutio and Nurse are the most playful characters of this play. Like Richard in “Richard III”, Porter and Weird Sisters in “Macbeth”, Fool in “Lear” or Iago in “Othello”, they are the recipients of the most animated spirits. While Romeo and Juliet advance the narrative, these supporting characters create sparks for the moment. I enjoyed the play more for these sparks than for the larger movements of the plot

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

By Matthew Frederick

Product Description

2008 Silver Award Winner, Architecture Category, Independent Publisher Book Awards. and Winning entry, General Trade Illustrated Category, in the 2008 New England Book Show sponsored by Bookbuilders of Boston.

This is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language things that tend to be murky and abstruse in the classroom. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation–from the basics of “How to Draw a Line” to the complexities of color theory–provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy, making concrete what too often is left nebulous or open-ended in the architecture curriculum. Each lesson utilizes a two-page format, with a brief explanation and an illustration that can range from diagrammatic to whimsical. The lesson on “How to Draw a Line” is illustrated by examples of good and bad lines; a lesson on the dangers of awkward floor level changes shows the television actor Dick Van Dyke in the midst of a pratfall; a discussion of the proportional differences between traditional and modern buildings features a drawing of a building split neatly in half between the two. Written by an architect and instructor who remembers well the fog of his own student days, 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School provides valuable guideposts for navigating the design studio and other classes in the architecture curriculum. Architecture graduates–from young designers to experienced practitioners–will turn to the book as well, for inspiration and a guide back to basics when solving a complex design problem.

Review
101 Things de-mythologizes the jargon that obscures the real meanings of what is taught in design schools. Designers too often write in obtuse terms that make relatively simple concepts difficult to comprehend. But understanding how we perceive, experience, and interpret the spaces we inhabit should not make us feel dumb, or left out. This readable and graphically clear book is a great introduction to design terms, principles, and concepts. Anyone interested in design will learn much from this terrific book.”
Theodore C. Landsmark, President, Boston Architectural College, President 2006-07, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture

“How to draw a line, the meaning of figure-ground theory, hand-lettering and the fact that windows look dark in the daytime–each item has resonance beyond architecture. Books like this are brief tutorials in the art of seeing, a skill useful in every aspect of life on the planet.”
Susan Salter Reynolds, latimes.com

“Matthew Frederick offers a wide-ranging assortment of architectural pearls of wisdom that every architecture student should understand, consider and embrace–or perhaps reject–when first learning the daunting process of design. Encompassing both theory and practice, and illustrated with often witty drawings, 101 Things is an eclectic itemization of architectural philosophies, compositional strategies and tactics, design conventions, drawing and presentation techniques, and even tips about how to behave as an architect.”
Roger K. Lewis, Professor Emeritus of Architecture, University of Maryland, author of Architect? A Candid Guide to the Profession

About the Author
Matthew Frederick is an architect and urban designer in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has taught at a number of colleges and universities, including Boston Architectural College and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

More than a book for architects
I’ve owned this book for two months now, and after skimming through it a few times early on, I’ve come to where I’m reading it regularly, and with expanded purpose and meaning. Although I’m not an architect, I do work with them, and find architects to be fascinating people. This book brings to life many of the under-pinnings of how architects think and see the world. These foundational aspects of the profession are also quite useful and stimulating to life in general, and therein lies the beauty of this book. #81 is striking to me: “Properly gaining control of the design process tends to feel like one is losing control of the design process.” Often, designing our lives requires just such a sense of losing control before the clarity has arrived.

Since we all inhabit designed spaces and visit them daily, this book can offer a tremendous amount of perpsective to enrich that otherwise typically mundane or ignored opportunity of simply noticing how an architect has thought about greeting us. Let “101 Things…” wash over you, and I think you’ll find it joyful and meaningful.

Great book!
Fantastic book for architecture students. Lots of short, simple lessons that make clear all the stuff my instructors never fully explained. What’s a “parti?” What is postmodernism? What do positive and negative space have to do with anything? Those and a lot more, plus some well chosen quotes give you a lot to think about and build upon. Highly recommended purchase for beginning students and maybe architects too.

Amazing from paper to pixels to the big screen.
After seeing the movie I just knew I had to get the “Art of” book. Amazing. 5 stars easy.

Nice illustrations…
The Art of Kung Fu Panda I purchased this as a birthday present for my niece who recently graduated with a degree in graphics design. She and her boyfriend, who is also a graphics designer, really liked the book.

A truely amazing book!
First of all, a confenssion – Kung Fu Panda is probably my favorite movie of 2008. I ordered this book on a whim, thinking it would be a nice little book to look over and remember the movie. Boy was I wrong! This book is stuffed to the gills with the history of each and every character in the movie, as well as those that didn’t make the final cut. It’s awesome to read the different directions the characters took before they settled on what would appear in the movie. It’s also cool to read some of the background of the characters that I didn’t know, like Oogway being from the Galapagoes and traveling the world before settling in China. It only adds to the depth and richness of a great story of a great movie. And the art is beautiful to look at – I’ve taken hours just staring at the detail of all the pictures. To quote Master Oogway, “Yesterday’s history, tomorrow’s a mystery. Today’s a gift – that’s why they call it the present.” Do yourself a favor and give yourself the present of this book – Today!!!

Just got this book this afternoon and have already read most of it and skimmed through all of it. It is very informative and well written. TONS of pictures showing examples of different techniques used. Overall a great basic book you can always refer to when you need some extra help. I like that it doesn’t go too much into Photoshop. I try to take good photos that don’t need to be manipulated later and I have no idea how to use my Photoshop anyway…so this is a great book for me! It will explain all you need to know to start taking some great pictures that are more than just snapshots for the photo album.

Very Good!
Very detailed guide for how to use you D40x camera. It gives you information easy to follow for beginners as well as pros. It has helped me to know some short cuts that are excellent for when you are in hurry to take that great pic.

NIKON should Include this in the Box!!!
This is WAY better than the ‘manual’ that comes with the D40. In my humble opinion, this should be included in the box!!

If you purchase a Nikon D40/D40X you will want to be certain to purchase this book too…especially if is the first time you have used a SLR camera and are totally green to the photography lingo!!

This book explains it without making you feel like you are being talked down to!!

Perfect!
This is the perfect Nikon D40/D40x guide for anyone unfamiliar with DSLRs. I had a somewhat basic understanding of my D40’s controls before I bought this book and reading it has made such a difference in my pictures. Highly reccommended!

Head First Java, 2nd Edition

Head First Java, 2nd Edition

By Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates

Product Description

Learning a complex new language is no easy task especially when it s an object-oriented computer programming language like Java. You might think the problem is your brain. It seems to have a mind of its own, a mind that doesn’t always want to take in the dry, technical stuff you’re forced to study.

The fact is your brain craves novelty. It’s constantly searching, scanning, waiting for something unusual to happen. After all, that’s the way it was built to help you stay alive. It takes all the routine, ordinary, dull stuff and filters it to the background so it won’t interfere with your brain’s real work–recording things that matter. How does your brain know what matters? It’s like the creators of the Head First approach say, suppose you’re out for a hike and a tiger jumps in front of you, what happens in your brain? Neurons fire. Emotions crank up. Chemicals surge.

That’s how your brain knows.

And that’s how your brain will learn Java. Head First Java combines puzzles, strong visuals, mysteries, and soul-searching interviews with famous Java objects to engage you in many different ways. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s effective. And, despite its playful appearance, Head First Java is serious stuff: a complete introduction to object-oriented programming and Java. You’ll learn everything from the fundamentals to advanced topics, including threads, network sockets, and distributed programming with RMI. And the new. second edition focuses on Java 5.0, the latest version of the Java language and development platform. Because Java 5.0 is a major update to the platform, with deep, code-level changes, even more careful study and implementation is required. So learning the Head First way is more important than ever.

If you’ve read a Head First book, you know what to expect–a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. You’ll see why people say it’s unlike any other Java book you’ve ever read.

By exploiting how your brain works, Head First Java compresses the time it takes to learn and retain–complex information. Its unique approach not only shows you what you need to know about Java syntax, it teaches you to think like a Java programmer. If you want to be bored, buy some other book. But if you want to understand Java, this book’s for you.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
It has taken four years, but with Head First Java the introductory Java book category has finally come of age. This is an excellent book, far more capable than any of the scores of Java-for-novices books that have come before it. Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates deserve rich kudos–and big sales–for developing this book’s new way of teaching the Java programming language, because any reader with even a little bit of discipline will come away with true understanding of how the language works. Perhaps best of all, this is no protracted “Hello, World” introductory guide. Readers get substantial exposure to object-oriented design and implementation, serialization, neatwork programming, threads, and Remote Method Invocation (RMI).

Key to the authors’ teaching style are carefully designed graphics. Rather than explain class inheritance (to cite one example) primarily with text, the authors use a series of tree diagrams that clarify the mechanism far more succinctly. The diagrams are carefully annotated with arrows and notes. Also characteristic of the unique teaching strategy is heavy reliance on exercises, in which the reader is asked to complete partial classes, write whole new code segments and do design work. Though there’s little discussion of why the exercises’ correct answers are what they are, it’s clear that the practice work was carefully designed to reinforce the lesson at hand. If you’ve waited this long to give Java a try, this book is a great choice. –David Wall

Topics covered: The Java programming language for people with no Java experience, and even people with no programming experience at all. Key concepts read like a list of Java features: Object oriented design, variable type and scope, object properties and methods, inheritance and polymorphism, exceptions, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), network connectivity, Java archives (JAR files), and Remote Method Invocation (RMI).

From the Inside Flap
“It’s fast, irreverent, fun and engaging. Be careful–you might actually learn something!” – Ken Arnold, coauthor (with James Gosling, creator of Java) The Java Programming Language “It’s definitely time to dive in–Head First.”

– Scott McNealy, Sun Microsystems, Chairman, President, and CEO

Customer Reviews

Nice for Beginners
Let me start by saying that I had no experience when it came to writing any sort of code before I got this book.

This book’s graphical approach appealed to me and indeed helped a lot. I’m still no where near finished with it but so far it has been very useful. I wish it had suggested some IDE’s to help me get started like Eclipse or NetBeans but I knew some programmers who could help me out.

In terms of general knowledge of java and its uses this book does an outstanding job. I enjoy the humor and the examples in this book as well. It’s not the best book if you want to know comprehensive java but it isn’t made for that. It only got 4 stars because I don’t feel like a text book needs a rave review.

Best Java book on the Market….
This book is the most user friendly book to teach Java. This is how I got started, and am now a full-on software developer for a fortune-500 company making a good living. I recommend this and other books in the HF series to anyone wanting to learn programming on their own.

Good intro to Java — mediocre for Head First
I’ll admit it… I’m a huge fan of the Head First series. This is the third I own and at least two others (currently unreleased) are on my to-buy list just waiting for their release. The style of Head First books in general is fantastic and helps things make sense right away. That being said, I was a bit disappointed in certain aspects of Head First Java. Make no mistake, I still heartily recommend it, but it was not as good as it could have been.

Frankly, the only specific identifiable element that I disliked was the crossword puzzles. Now, I LOVE the crossword puzzles in other Head First books. In fact, they’re one of my favorite elements in the Head First equation. However, the crosswords in Head First Java were lacking, often with strange “hints” that were more confusing than helping. Examples: “can’t pin it down”, “dept. of LAN jockeys”, and “Pi house”.

Additionally, the overall feel of the book was inferior to the previous two I’ve read (Head First C# and Head First SQL). Unfortunately, I can’t articulate exactly what the difference is, but it just wasn’t as engrossing as the others.

In the end, I do recommend the book. It is a fine-quality product. However, do not use this as a prime example of the Head First series — it is not their best.

“The first book on photographic lighting that is worth using as a text. Light – Science and Magic is about principles, not cheap tricks or the authors’ portfolio.”
-Pete Christman, Savannah College of Art and Design.

“This revision is really an extraordinary accomplishment in offering a thorough understanding and application of lighting. The authors new approach, with updated illustrations and lessons makes for both a good read and great textbook. I would recommend this book for any lighting class, from basic to the most advanced course.”

-Dennis Keeley

“Any time you have a book that makes it to the third edition, you have a winner.”

“If you are a photographer of any type, especially on who does studio work, this is a must have reference.”

“The added bonus is that the topics learned from this book will never go out of date.”

-BC Books (May 2007)

Review
‘This is the first book I have seen on photographic lighting that is worth using as a text. Light-Science and Magic is about principles, not cheap tricks or the authors’ portfolio. Thanks.’—Pete Christman, Savannah College of Art and Design.

‘An excellent guide to high-quality studio-style lighting, even on location.’—John Alderson, Booklist.

From the Publisher
Although styles of photographic lighting continue to change, Light: Science and Magic does not go out of fashion because it is not based on style; rather it is based on the behavior of light. These principles will not change unless the fundamentals of physics do.

Customer Reviews

Great book
haven’t finished the book yet but it’s very intresting and full of useful information, some of the stuff that i alresdy knew but didn’t how to apply to photography, so it was great to have such a book to put it words, learned alot from it.

What does this have to do with “strobists”?
I bought this book on Strobist (aka David Hobby) recommendation (featured in his thousand-users-per-day site).
Ok, it’s about lighting reflective, translucent and other difficult subjects. But everything is supposed to be done in a STUDIO setting. What does this have to do with the “strobist ideology” (using small remote flashes for photography)?
You do need an expensive array of studio gear to make the best out of the examples and diagrams presented (even a view camera is proposed in photographing reflective objects!). And I’m serious. How can you judge the reflection of a black label over a reflective cd case without modeling lights? With “chimping”? How can you light appropriately a varnished wooden box to show texture as demostrated in the book without flags, gobos and large softboxes? With straw grids?
But, let’s be real here! Much of this book’s publicity is owned to David Hobby and the “strobist” crowd. But if you consider yourself a “strobist” you can learn much more by reading the articles in the strobist site. Or buy a different book. Maybe the one DH is writing right now 😉

Light Science and Magic
I found this book to be extremely helpful in explaining the physical properties of light and how these properties interact on different surfaces. The book helped me develop a knowledge of light control and how to put that knowledge to work in my photography.

An Excellent, Straightforward Approach to Layers
This book is a very good reference for both beginners and advance users of Photoshop. It provides details and methods on using layers without “going around the bush”. Straightforward, precise, and filled with humor… you’ll not be bored reading instructional book like this one. Sample images can be accessed online is a plus. My only gripe is that this was not available before when I was looking for some reference guide to Photoshop.

A Very Good Reference
I was pretty good at using layers in Photoshop before buying this book. Now I’m much better. It’s written in the same style as the Scott Kelby books; simple and straight forward step-by-step showing you how to do things. I use books like this as references, keeping them on a shelf near my work area and using them to remind me of ways to achieve some effects. If you’re not an Adobe Certified Expert I recommend this book.

Matt hits a home run!
Matt Kloskowski’s book on Photoshop layers is excellent. I enjoy his books and podcasts. I recommend this to anyone serious about Photoshop.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood

By Marjane Satrapi

Product Description

A New York Times Notable Book
A Time Magazine “Best Comix of the Year”
A San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times Best-seller

Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran’s last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.

Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. Marjane’s child’s-eye view of dethroned emperors, state-sanctioned whippings, and heroes of the revolution allows us to learn as she does the history of this fascinating country and of her own extraordinary family. Intensely personal, profoundly political, and wholly original, Persepolis is at once a story of growing up and a reminder of the human cost of war and political repression. It shows how we carry on, with laughter and tears, in the face of absurdity. And, finally, it introduces us to an irresistible little girl with whom we cannot help but fall in love.

Fresh perspective
I feel I learned more about the history of Iran through the eyes of a little girl who was practically forced to become an adult by the age of 14 than most textbooks. Marjane Satrapi, or “Marji” captured my attention, thanks to the successful marriage of her “crudely-drawn” panels and approachable narrative. While I have yet to read the sequel, I feel I know this individual on a personal level as the book fills us in on her deepest fears and hopes and conflicts.

Awesome Experience
Although this book is written like a comic book, don’t take it lightly. The story is a deep and meaningful one. It is a pretty fast read but not as fast as you’d think…I highly recommend it!

Should occupy a place of honor–within arm’s reach–of everyone attempting to understand or depict numerical data graphically. The design of the book is an exemplar of the principles it espouses: elegant typography and layout, and seamless integration of lucid text and perfectly chosen graphical examples. Very Highly Recommended.

Excellent
Nutshell review – This is an excellent book on chart design and the effective presentation of information. Beautifully illustrated with in-depth insight and research.

Just the facts, ma’am (and how to present them)
Mr. Tufte’s book is like nothing I ever read before. At first I was put off by his uber self-confidence, but as I read the book further, I realized that the self-confidence was not out of place.
In an entertaining way, with splendid examples and splendid anti-examples, this book gets to the core of presenting honest and dense data and eliminating all pretense. Wait ’til you grasp the concept of “Small Multiples” and just as importantly, when not to use a graph.
Before I was finished the book, I revamped a couple of my charts and upgraded one to showing multiple variables across multiple years using “Small Multiples”.
